Mission & Vision

The Maehwa Project is a long-term cultural bridge dedicated to the recovery, translation, and international publication of significant Korean literary works.

A Bridge to the World

While Korean cinema, music, and art have achieved unprecedented global recognition, the depth and breadth of Korean literature remain disproportionately underrepresented. Many foundational works of the 20th century exist only in outdated, abridged, or stylistically uneven translations—if they have been rendered into Western languages at all. We address this cultural gap by providing modern, unabridged, and literary-first editions that respect the original rhythm and intent of the author.

Recovery and Restoration

Our project begins with the physical and linguistic recovery of texts. We look back to the early modern period—the era of the "Winter Scholar"—when Korean intellectuals first grappled with modernity, colonialism, and national identity. By restoring these voices, we provide a necessary historical anchor for understanding contemporary Korean culture. Every work we select is a vital thread in the tapestry of the Korean experience.

Our Editorial Philosophy

We prioritize literary integrity and aesthetic clarity. Our "Winter Scholar" model combines advanced translation technology with rigorous human editorial review by scholars and writers. This ensure that the nuanced voice of the Korean author is preserved while being rendered in an English (and subsequently European) prose that is sophisticated, readable, and faithful. We do not translate merely for meaning, but for soul.

Multilingual Reach

Translation is not a singular event but an ongoing process. We utilize our high-quality English editions as foundations for secondary translations into German, French, Spanish, Italian, and other European languages. By creating a unified multilingual network, we ensure that Korean literature finds its rightful place in the global library of classics, accessible to all who seek it.

We do not translate merely for meaning, but for soul.

Our Commitment

The Maehwa Project is committed to long-term cultural stewardship. We believe that by making these foundational works available to a global audience, we are preserving not just stories, but the very intellectual history of a nation.
